    The University of Southampton has been announced as the successful bidder for a study to assess the potential impact of satellites burning up in Earth’s atmosphere (atmospheric ablation). 

    Dr Minkwan Kim, Associate Professor in Astronautics at the University of Southampton, is leading the study and said:

    “This topic has never been studied before. The ablation process is complex and we don’t yet fully understand how different materials behave during re-entry to the atmosphere. 

    “Our project will look at what happens to the elements that are released, where they go, and how they might be affecting our planet’s delicate environmental balance.”
